Philippians

The book of Philippians, written by the Apostle Paul around 61 AD during his imprisonment in Rome, is a letter of encouragement to the church in Philippi. Paul expressed gratitude for their partnership in the gospel and assured them that God would complete the work He began in them. He urged the believers to live in unity, humility, and selflessness by modeling their lives after Christ. Paul encouraged finding peace through prayer and dwelling on what is true and praiseworthy. He concluded by thanking the Philippians for their generosity and reminding them of God’s provision.

Chapter 1

Paul and Timothy addressed their letter to the church in Philippi, greeting them with grace and peace from God the Father and Jesus Christ.

Thangsgiving And Prayer

Paul thanked God joyfully for the Philippians' partnership in the gospel and expressed confidence in God’s ongoing work in their lives. He prayed for their love to grow in knowledge and discernment, so they live pure and righteous lives for God's glory.

Paul's Chains Advance The Gospel

Paul shared how his imprisonment advanced the gospel. By being in chains for Christ, others were inspired to boldly proclaim the gospel. He rejoiced that Christ was preached, regardless of motives, and trusted God for deliverance. Paul explained that life was meant to be a fruitful labor for Christ, while death meant gain. Though he desired to be with Christ, he believed his continued life was necessary for the Philippians’ spiritual growth and joy.

Life Worthy Of The Gospel

Paul urged the Philippians to live in a way that honored the gospel, while standing united and fearless against opposition. He reminded them that their faith and suffering for Christ were a divine privilege.

Imitating Christ's Humility - Chapter 2

Paul urged believers to embrace Christ’s example of humility. He called them to unity, selflessness, and love by valuing others above themselves. Paul explained how Jesus, being in the same nature as God, humbled Himself by becoming human and obedient to death on the cross. Because of this, God the Father exalted Him above all, ensuring that every being would acknowledge Him as Lord.

Do Everything Without Grumbling

Paul encouraged the Philippians to work out their salvation with reverence, trusting God to guide their actions. He exhorted them to live blamelessly, avoiding complaints and arguments, so they would shine as lights in a corrupt world. Paul rejoiced in their faith and sacrifice, inviting them to share in his joy despite his trials.

Timothy And Epaphroditus

Paul hoped to send them Timothy as a faithful servant of the gospel. He also commended Epaphroditus, who risked his life to serve Paul. Despite severe illness, Epaphroditus completed his mission and brought joy to Paul. Paul urged the Philippians to honor such dedicated workers for Christ.

No Confidence In The Flesh - Chapter 3

Paul warned the Philippians against false teachers who placed confidence in outward rituals like circumcision. He emphasized that true believers worship by the Spirit and boast in Christ. Paul explained his own credentials under the law like his lineage, zeal, and legalistic righteousness, but declared them worthless compared to knowing Christ. He longed for righteousness through faith in Christ and desired to share in Christ’s suffering and resurrection. Paul acknowledged he had not reached perfection but was determined to press on toward God’s heavenly calling in Christ.

Following Paul's Example

Paul urged the Philippians to adopt a mature perspective and live according to what they had already learned in Christ. He urged them to follow his example and warned against those who lived as enemies of the cross. Enemies of the cross focused on earthly things. Paul reminded them that their true citizenship was in heaven. He expressed hope in Christ’s return, when believers’ earthly bodies would be transformed to resemble His glorious body through His divine power.

Closing Appeal For Steadfastness And Unity - Chapter 4

Paul urged the Philippians to stand firm in the Lord. He encouraged Euodia and Syntyche to resolve their differences and asked his true companion to assist them. Paul reminded the church that their names were written in the book of life.

Final Exhortations

Paul called for constant rejoicing in the Lord. He urged the Philippians to let their gentleness be evident. He instructed them not to be anxious but to bring every concern to God through prayer and thanksgiving, promising that God’s peace would guard their hearts and minds. He encouraged them to focus on what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, or praiseworthy.

Thanks For Their Gifts

Paul expressed deep gratitude for the Philippians’ renewed care and generosity. He explained that he found contentment in all circumstances through Christ who strengthened him. Paul acknowledged their support and praised their gifts as pleasing to God. He assured them that God would supply all their needs according to His glorious riches in Christ.

Final Greetings

Paul concluded with a doxology (a short hymn or liturgy to praise God). He sent greetings to all God’s people, mentioning those with him and members of Caesar’s household. He ended the letter with a blessing and proclaimed "The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit." - Philippians 4:23.
